Dheeraj and Hayes stand tall at Hampstead

A disciplined bowling display led by Dan Hayes (4-35) and N Ravikrishna (3-32) ensured Jesters CC 1st XI held on to defend 224 and claim a 21-run victory over Hampstead CC at Hampstead Cricket Club.

After Hampstead won the toss and elected to bowl, the Jesters innings got off to a flying start, with debutant Manan and big hitter Nik putting on 51 without loss in just five overs. A wobble is never far away with the Jesters, though, and with numbers 3 and 4 — skipper DJ Chak and the experienced Louis Harris — contributing a combined 1 off 11 balls to leave the side 82/5, an early finish looked on the cards.

Cometh the hour, cometh the men. The Jesters total was eventually built around a superb century partnership between Dheeraj and Rob Harrison, who dragged the innings back from the brink with a masterclass in composure and control.

Dheeraj, at No.6, played a measured and authoritative knock — 88 balls, 10 fours and 3 sixes — steering his side from a precarious 82/5 to a strong 224/8. In a chanceless innings that accelerated beautifully, Dheeraj looked utterly unstoppable and was extremely unfortunate to be run out for 90 off a deflection at the non-striker's end; if it's any consolation, he made it onto the Hampstead CC Instagram page. Rob was the perfect foil throughout, batting with real discipline for his 27 off 53 before retiring out — anchoring the innings and giving Dheeraj the platform to play his shots, their century stand the cornerstone of the entire total.

In reply, Hampstead made promising starts through Nabil Ahmed (14) and Varun Goel (27), but the inimitable Hayes bowled a destructive spell, removing the top four. His double-wicket burst in the 16th over — trapping Raghavan lbw and bowling Enticknap — left the hosts struggling at 62/4. Dan was ably supported by a miserly spell of 6-1-15-0 by another Jesters debutant Sid Shukla who bowled beautifully and beat the bat several times without any luck.

Prabhjit Walia looked in great from for Hampstead with a fluent 81, striking 13 fours and a six, and shared a vital 49-run stand with Gagandeep Singh (29) to steady the ship. But once Nik came on to break that partnership with his big turning leg spinners, snaring Singh caught by the skipper at slip, the innings unravelled. Nik finished with 3-32, also removing Shams Uddin (9) and Rohan Verma (1) in a fine spell of control. Matt Griffiths (2-46) provided excellent support at the other end. The undisputed highlight in the field was a Louis Harris catch at point — running backwards before sticking out a hand to pluck the ball out of the air, to squeals of delight from the Jesters and the crowd. Top scorer Prabhjit was the unfortunate batter, making it a very important dismissal.

Hampstead were bowled out for 203 in 39.4 overs, giving Jesters a hard-fought win built on patience with the bat and precision with the ball. Huge thanks to Hampstead for another great day out — another competitive game played in exactly the right spirit.
